Saddle Blankets
To create a high-quality, hand-latched Wool Saddle Blanket it is of the utmost importance to start with a good quality, tightly woven burlap foundation. Burlap is the best foundation for a saddle blanket as it is a natural fiber which allows for breath ability - allows the passage of air and moisture, and conforms perfectly with the shape of a horse's back.

Wool wicks moisture away, so the combination of the wool and burlap is the best coupling for keeping a horse's back dry and comfortable. The weave of the burlap must be tight and even, otherwise the blanket will feel loose and sloppy, will have a shorter using life, and will just not be a high-quality blanket. For each blanket, a piece of burlap is cut with all sides being approximately one inch wider than the desired finished size eg: for a 32"X32" blanket, the burlap is cut 34"X34". I recommend pulling the strings first and then cutting to the desired size.

Then on two sides, each 7th string is pulled out. This creates a "checkerboard" pattern, and it is at the junction of each square that the wool roping is pulled through. The raw ends of the burlap are fixed with Fray Check or Aleen's Stop Fray (brand names), then each edge is double hemmed to ensure that there will never be any unraveling. Now, using a latch-hook tool, the work begins with the wool roping to complete the blanket. The blankets are attractive, durable and comfortable for both horse and rider. The blankets shown are made for Western saddles, but I have also made blankets for Dressage and Jumping. These blankets can also be made for Miniature ponies and donkeys. Please contact me for a consultation/quote for English riding pads and Miniatures sizes and prices.

All blankets are approximately 1-1 1/2"(2.5-3cm) thick and range in weight from approximately 3lbs.(1.36kg) for the smaller blankets to 5 lbs(2.26kg) for the larger blankets - these weights do not include wear pads. Leather wear pads(weight 0.05lbs/0.22kg) extend the life of a blanket and can be added for additional cost of $100.00. Patterns available: Stripes, Solid Border, Half-Diamond, Checkerboard.

Care & Cleaning of Wool Saddle Blankets:
There are two schools of thought about the care and cleaning of Wool Saddle Blankets. One school thinks that the blankets should not be cleaned - that the accumulation of hair, sweat and dirt combines to make a better blanket. Therefore, the blanket should be used until worn out.
The other school thinks that washing prolongs the life of a blanket. If you choose to wash your blanket, I recommend using the following method:
Drape the blanket over a wood fence or sawhorse, or lay onto a picnic table with separated slats to allow for drainage. Using lukewarm water and soap, wet the blanket and using your fingers, gently break-up the hair, sweat and dirt. Rinse very well to remove all the soap - the water should run clear. The blanket will soak up A LOT of water, so it is best to leave it where it is to dry - will be VERY heavy and hard to lift. Let the blanket drip dry over several days, turning it every day to ensure even drying. If you have a pressure washer, these machines can save a lot of elbow grease - set the flow on low to medium pressure.
Remember that washing a blanket is akin to washing a good wool sweater - use lukewarm water and a mild, wool-friendly soap.
